To work alone

What does working alone mean? A “lone worker” is defined as: an employee who performs his work alone, and therefore in isolation (i.e. outside the direct earshot and/or field of vision of other colleagues or managers). In many sectors, employees regularly work alone. For example, think of:

  • Laboratory technicians who work alone in a laboratory with hazardous substances;
  • Healthcare workers who work in institutions or on an outpatient basis;
  • In the event of breakdowns and maintenance where employees are on picket or breakdown shifts;
  • In the industry where work is done in shifts;
  • Guards or security guards;
  • Cleaners and window cleaners;
  • Bailiffs;
  • Shopkeepers;
  • Overtime;
  • Home work;

Employees who work alone are at (greater) risk of an industrial accident. In an emergency, there are no colleagues nearby who can help. They must therefore be able to raise the alarm and an automatic alarm must be sent if the employee is no longer able to do so himself. (man down).

Is working alone allowed? Working alone is allowed and there are no specific rules for lone employees. Working alone is not permitted for employees under the age of 18, employees who have not yet been fully trained and, for example, have only just been employed, employees with health risks or employees who use medication.

In the mandatory RI&E (Risk Inventory and Evaluation), as an employer you are obliged to evaluate who works alone, when and where. In addition, the employer must take measures where necessary to limit the risks of “working alone”. Employers must therefore ensure the safety and health of their employees. Read more about this in the Working Conditions Act:

Use personal alarms so that “lone workers” can work safely

Employers can ensure that employees who work alone can still carry out their work (alone) in a safe manner. They can do this, for example, by using personal alarms in which a man down (unconscious detection) system is integrated.

The innovative solution from X-Guard
Location- and time-related protection with automatic switching to a man-down function!

At X-Guard we would like to introduce you to the new way of securing! When you are at a certain location where security is necessary, your personal alarm (the X-Guard Alarm app) is automatically activated and you are protected.

man-down

Using the Risk button in our Alarm app, you can safely carry out your work alone as a 'lone worker'. If you fall and there are no people in your immediate vicinity, the Alarm app detects that you are not moving enough and automatically sounds the alarm. As soon as you sit down quietly somewhere, during a break or when visiting the toilet, you can switch on the pause mode yourself or it will be switched on automatically when the phone is placed on a flat surface. The man-down function is then switched on again when movement is detected after the pause time has expired.

The man-down function in the Alarm app is therefore a function that is fully equipped. 'Lone workers' never really have to work completely alone with the X-Guard Alarm app. However, we noticed that inconveniences can also arise at certain times because, for example, you forget to disable the Risk button or because the pause mode is not automatically enabled. The pre-alarm that is automatically generated if there is insufficient movement can then go off and that can cause irritation and nuisance.

No Man-down though 'Lone worker detection'

Because the Alarm app has detected that you are working alone, we are going to scale up your security.

The Alarm app detects that you are working alone at a location or time when you are not allowed to work alone. We will protect you at these locations and times, without you having to worry about it – all you have to do is carry the Alarm app with you. It's a kind of ''airbag'' in your phone; You don't have to switch anything on – it's just there. Safety and comfort in one!

How does it work?

As an organization or company, you can indicate when (times) and where (location/risk areas) someone is not allowed to work alone. We then ensure that the functions in the Alarm app are set in such a way that employee(s) can work safely in these places and at these times: an automatic alarm is generated in the event of insufficient movement. We ensure that you can work safely alone without having to worry about anything.

X-Guard can configure the above in many different ways according to your wishes. These times and locations can also be added manually in the app by means of the Automatic Switching setting.
