Warzone reporters, crime journalists: we’re well aware that these roles involve a certain level of risk, especially when these correspondents are posted to warzones. That said, over the past few years, we’ve witnessed ever more aggression against ‘normal’ journalists and local reporters in our own country too. In 2021, I&O Research carried out a survey on behalf of PersVeilig on increased aggression — and the results speak for themselves.
“Two thirds of journalists encountered verbal aggression at least once over the past twelve months. More than a third experienced at least four incidents of verbally aggressive behaviour. Half of journalists have received threats or have been intimidated over the past year.”
“The coronavirus protests and the curfew riots are often quoted by journalists as events that really left a mark. The press reporting on these events were pelted with stones or fireworks, were verbally threatened and pursued by rioters. According to eyewitnesses, the atmosphere was extremely threatening. As one journalist who was there put it: “I was out on the streets in (town) during the curfew riots. There were several large groups out and about, shouting and destroying things. A colleague told me that a cameraman had to flee the scene as he was being pursued by a large group. The atmosphere was extremely threatening, intimidating and unreal.””
X-Guard’s motto is ‘Everyone safe everywhere’. The company mainly targets the corporate market. Kuipers: “That doesn’t just mean people working in offices or at home. It also includes journalists: people who stick their neck out and do their jobs in situations that can be experienced as hugely threatening.” Kuipers believes that barriers to getting assistance need to be removed.
Kuipers recently ended up taking to a reporter. While chatting, he noticed something peculiar: the idea to protect journalists, photographers and reporters using a form of personal alarm while they are doing their jobs hadn’t yet struck anyone as immediately obvious. When combined with figures showing that only 4% of journalists who encounter aggression or violence actually file a report with the police, this observation certainly raised a few eyebrows. Kuipers: “In hindsight, people often think that a situation wasn’t serious enough to report it to the police, but in the moment itself, the threat and fear is real.”
The reason journalists give for not reporting matters to the police is that these things are “part of their job”. Kuipers believes that that’s a real shame. He wants to make it clear to this particular group that personal alarms will come in useful for them too. “I want these people to know that help is there for them when they need it. When you see the kinds of threats journalists receive, a personal alarm system seems like the obvious solution. Just think for a moment: if you could have pressed a button at the time and someone was guaranteed to have come to your aid, would you have done so?”
